We invite poets to write about finding beauty in our world beyond the societal norms - the pigeons, snails, rats and other creatures which are so often overlooked due to social conditioning. This could include a love of buildings, perceived flaws, old beloved areas or pieces of furniture, anything that evokes a sense of personal beauty or love, but is overlooked or seen as the opposite of beautiful by a wider world. ´Nature Writing´ can be seen as linked to those with time as a commodity, whereas most take tiny snapshots: a favourite tree, walk to the train station, a park for packed lunch, squeezing in nature where they can. Perhaps you will write about a mini oasis in your urban area, which for most is the extent of wildness that is seen on a regular basis - without driving out of town, or having a lot of spare time to walk out. Or maybe your work will touch upon how urban trees and nature landmarks can be used for navigation, and the sense of place, the inheritance that trees instil, as well as the multidimensional health benefits. We are interested in how we can be within the beauty of nature, without being surrounded by it, your snapshots of unconventional beauty and observations of urban spaces and nature.

Proceeds from sales of the anthology will be divided between Starlight Trust https://starlighttrust.org.uk/ and Trees for Cities https://www.treesforcities.org/

Poets may submit up to three previously unpublished poems of 25 lines maximum each not including the title. We would like to read new work reacting to the world as we currently find it and all the beauty that surrounds us when we take the time to notice. We consider previously published to be in any journal, magazine, anthology or collection either in print or online, on personal websites, blogs, social media and online poetry sites. Please submit brand new work inspired by the themes in our guidelines.

Please submit once during the submission window. We also instantly reject work which goes against our Inclusivity Statement. Poems created by AI will not be accepted. Simultaneous submissions are OK, but if your pieces are accepted elsewhere, please let us know by emailing theweesparrowpoetrypress@gmail.com.

A friendly reminder that we are a team of busy unpaid volunteers so be patient with response times for submissions.

We never charge submission fees but we do appreciate "coffees" which go towards running costs such as purchasing ISBNs, proof print copies etc.

We look forward to reading your words.
